The Terrain Crusade Competition

Terrain For Hippos in association with The Campaigner is proud to bring you the TERRAIN CRUSAD COMPETITION!

Allow me to quote lavishly from the Campaigner (because I am overly lazy and do not wish to write my own spiel)

"Now you can have the talents of The Campaigner’s resident terrain expert, Owen Top, among your own collection. The building Owen created for last issues Terrain Crusade is up for grabs. But it can’t go to just any home, it has to be won by Owen’s most learned student. The challenge is to show Owen what you have learnt by creating a piece of terrain. It can be any size, but must be on a circular base 120mm in diameter (the size of a compact disc… how about that) and can fit any genre, theme or game system you like. The more creative and skilful the more you are likely to impress Owen.
Once completed you can send your entry to contact@thecampaignermagazine.com. Include your name, up to five photos showing the terrain piece from different angles, as well as a brief description on what the piece is and how you built it. Owen will choose the entry he most thinks fulfils the ideals of the Terrain Crusade.
Entries close Friday 25 March. One entry per person. Entry is available worldwide.

TFH Annual Terrain Compometition reminder

Egads! The Compometition Deadline looms! It's been a while since I had any progress to report (I've had a lot of commissions this year which have gotten in the way of my own projects), so I'd clean forgotten about the September 30th Deadline. I think I might actually extend it to October 5th so the whole thing ends conveniently on a weekend, allowing more time for last minute entries.
And here, to remind you, are the rules once more!

Annual Terrain Compometition 2012 Results!

It's been a big year for the TFH Annual Terrain Compometition this year, with way more entries than ever before. And it was a tough decision since all of the entries made good use of tekineekes from the blog - in some cases even modifying them to do other things! In the end, it actually came down to the quality of basing in both categories. The runners up were just edged out by a slightly better base on the winning entry.

Enough waffle! On to the anouncements!

JUNIOR CATEGORY:
All of the entries here again came from my school wargames club. This year we ran several sessions looking at making Dark Age style terrain so we can play SAGA. Not everyone could make every session, so in the end things were a bit rushed. Anyway, here are the runners up (apologies in advance about the two houses - I know Tristain built one, but I cannot remember which one, so I've left the names off. I'll add them when I find them out!)

AND NOW... THE WINNER!

Congratulations Brendan! You've won the magnificent prize of:

  • A Certiwotsit of Viktoriousness
  • An official, hand built DaFROG'S Racing Hat branded with the glorious emblem of TFH
  • A shiny TFH badge
  • A $50 TFH Custom Terrain Voucher

Congratulations to all the enterants - you'll be getting a Certiwotsit of Runner Upness and a TFH badge each at the first LSCWC meeting of Term 4.

And now, the moment you've all been waiting for...
THE SENIORS!
First, the runners up in no particular order...

AND NOW... THE WINNER!

Congratulations to Pete for his Mordheim Prison. He'll be recieving the magnificent prize consisting of:

  • A Certiwotsit of Viktoriousness
  • An official, hand built DaFROG'S Racing Hat branded with the glorious emblem of TFH
  • A shiny TFH badge
  • A $50 TFH Custom Terrain Voucher

Congratulations to every one who entered - you will all be receiving a Certiwotsit of some kind which you can hang proudly on your wall so that you draw the envy of other men and the adulation of women (well, we can but hope!)

Well, that's it for this year. Keep up the good work chaps!

Annual Terrain Compometition: A Winner Is You!

Results for the annual terrain compometition are now in!

Juniors: James Ellis.
James is one of my students, and built a small watch tower over two lunchtimes. He doesn't have internet access at home, so he gave me the model to photograph (hence the 15mm projects in the background!).
James has used a thick cardboard tube, foamcore base, and thin cardboard for tiles and stone work. The whole thing was a bit of a rush project, so hopefully he'll improve in future!

Seniors: Terry Mason.
Here's Terry's own description of his project:

"Here's a trio of Trollkin huts for warmachine made using techniques learned from your site. I was very enthused by the appearance of the towel as roofing, but overall I think I could have done better with the paint jobs. I used blue foam from local company Foamex, balsa wood for the doors (scored for the 'board' effect, and with balsa cross beams), and PVA glued towelling for the roof over a cardboard cone."

Terry is a very cunning man - he used a Warmachine area of effect template as a template for cutting out the three layers of blue foam used in the project.
Well done Terry and James! You've both won the fabulous and shiny prizes outlined in the rules! And remember Hippo fans, next year it could be you!

Berfenday Compomotition Results!

Well, we can now reveal the winner to be
(drum roll)
Nick Crawford with his Open Air Khorne Temple!
Here's Nick to explain in his own words:

"These are the photos of my entry into your terrain competition. The piece is a sacrificial altar to the chaos god Khorne. The blood pool was created using the technique for making rivers and toxic sludge pools that you demonstrated in your blog. The terrain also incorporates other techniques you have shown."

Nick's used techniques from this blog to build his temple, even though it's nothing like any project we've featured. Remember hippo fans; you can learn great things reading this blog and use them on your own projects, you don't have to slavishly follow the instructions and build exactly what we do!
Anyway, here's Grot to show you round Nick's work.

Well Hippo Fans, we'll be back with Ishoo Twenty A when my current mania for customizing 1/32 scale Japanese cars from the 60s wears off...
Until then, may your dice always roll sixes (except when you don't want them too!)

Berfenday Compomotition Extension.

I've decided to give a one week extension for Berfenday Compometition entries as I only have one so far. You can certainly build something in a week, and who knows, you might win!
All entries must be emailed to me by the 7th of June to be elligible for he compo.

Berfenday Compomotition Prizes

I've had a few people ask about the prize for the Berfenday Compomotition.
As mentioned before, it is going to be an item of terrain which features in an Ishoo of TFH. However, it will not be one which is currently online. It'll be the item features in our First Berfenday Ishoo.
This is partially so you win the shiny and significant anniversary piece, but also so I don't end up sending the lucky winner my version of the terrain piece they won with!
It will, I assure you, be appropriately epic. And there might be a few bonuses in there with it.

So, in summary, the prize will remain unknown until it is revealed, and will be very shiny.

Terrain For Hippos Berfenday Competition!

Competition entries must be emailed to me by May 31st to be elligible - the results will be published a little while after that.

As to the prize, well, the winner will recieve not only the highly desirable certi-wotsit of winnerating, but also a genuine original TFH terrain item, as featured in one of our Ishoos (although I'm not saying which one just yet so you'll all have to live in suspense!)

Remember: Enter early, Enter often, and tell your freinds, relations and goldfish!
